I have a model 670 4wd.Has anyone had this problem:
The front wheels (both have done this) come off the machine!
The snap ring behind the bevel gear lets loose and the wheel falls off. This has happened about 3 times total in about 6 mo. I do not know what to do to fix this apparent weak link in the drive system, other than just keep putting it back on. Does anyone know the cause - am I driving it too aggressivly? All I have done is move dirt around and tried to move a few large stones/roots. It seems to me that this cannot be a common problem. Any suggestions.

Did you buy this used? Do you know the history of it? It sort of sounds like at some point it was assembled incorrectly or with the wrong parts or parts of the wrong spec. What do the snap rings look like when you dismantle it? Do they show signs of being beat up? ....

Thanks for the quick response.
I did buy it used. I have also wondered if it was assembled incorrectly. One of the rings was actually bent when the wheel fell off one time, I straightened it out and put it back on. They look like the correct parts but maybe they can be worn.
Also, since I had to separate the gasket of the hub to reassemble the wheel axle the gasket conn. now leaks, do you think this may be contributing to the problem? Do you have any info. on where to buy parts or repair info?
Thanks,
Steve C. ....

Straightening out a snap ring can't be a good thing. They are spring steel and once bent they lose some ability to clamp. A leaking gasket shouldn't cause the problem. I could only recommend a JD dealer for parts. Snap rings and gaskets shouldn't cost that much. Do you have a service or parts manual? If not you could spend a little time on jdparts dot com to look at the assembly. ....
